The Spoken Word Artist
L. Elliott, formerly known as SpiceePoet and SpiceeThePoet, began her poetry journey at the age of eight. Her early work involved reimagining song lyrics to reflect her personal experiences. As an adult, she continued to write purely for enjoyment, never considering performing her poetry until she discovered Def Poetry Jam, created by Russell Simmons. Unsure of where to start, she continued to write. Life took an unexpected turn when she went through a divorce, which led her to a part-time job at a restaurant with an open mic event on Tuesday evenings. On quieter nights, she took the opportunity to share her work, and the host, not knowing her by any other name, affectionately called her "Lovely Linda."
Ms. Elliott, however, preferred not to focus on names based on her outward appearance. After careful thought, she rebranded herself as SpiceePoet—drawing inspiration from those who had described her as having a "spicy" attitude due to her Puerto Rican and Italian heritage. She spelled it with two 'e's, joking, “Spicy with two e's because I’m extra with it.” This moniker was a perfect fit when she began as an erotic poet. However, as time passed, she realized some hosts limited her potential by only associating her with one genre of poetry.
Determined to grow beyond that, L. Elliott made the decision to rebrand herself again, this time using her full name. She found that "L. Elliott" had a natural, easy flow and embraced it. Today, while L. Elliott is capable of writing on a variety of topics, she primarily focuses on faith-inspired works and the complexities of relationships.
